Nature hikes and urban trekking

With Wellspring Trails, you can count on an expert guide who combines nature and canine expertise. The walking routes wind through local nature reserves or along less-traveled paths between Mediterranean scrub and woodland, following numerous waterways, with stops tailored to the group and everyone’s pace. You can walk without haste, in safety, enjoy nature, and live an unforgettable experience.

The excursions follow a seasonal calendar and are calibrated to various difficulty levels, in order to adapt to different needs and all ages. Our tail-wagging friends are not just welcomed; in some cases, they become the protagonists of experiences designed specifically for them. All excursions are also open to those without a dog who love the idea of spending a fun day in nature and good company.

And if you want to discover the villages and stories of the Val di Cecina Republic, we organize urban trekking, enriched by local produce tastings for a perfect finish and a toast together.

Wellspring Dog Trek

Canine walks designed for the wellbeing of the team (human/dog) and to promote a social experience in a small group.

Scent work, tracking activities, water games, and a controlled environment to experience a rewarding and safe adventure with your dog.

The dog trekking we offer is true teamwork between you and your dog: an activity of sensory and relational enrichment that takes place along a nature trail chosen with care.

Wellspring Hiking

Walking experiences for every need: couples, families, small groups, and people without dogs who wish to enjoy nature in total serenity.

For those who want to experience the territory intensely, the guide chooses off-the-beaten-path routes and avoids the most crowded trails, showing you details reserved only for true explorers.

You can spot roe deer prints and wolf tracks, admire glimpses and wide panoramas opening over the sea, and breathe the crisp air of the Tuscan hills. Or discover the precious local flora in every season: the plants and flowers of the wonderful Mediterranean scrub, cork oaks, coppice woods, mushrooms, and pristine undergrowth.

Val di Cecina, Costa degli Etruschi, and Alta Maremma offer countless opportunities for outdoor lovers. There are numerous protected natural areas with hiking trails of varying difficulty.

A special mention goes to the Riserva Naturale di Monterufoli-Caselli, recognized as one of the wilderness areas in Tuscany richest in biodiversity, with stunning spring blooms: 4,800 hectares of dense forests, scrub, and garigue, crossed by streams that give it a truly wild mood.

Wellspring Minitours and food & wine excursions

Relaxing itineraries and minitours combined with tastings at local farms. A way to discover the territory of the Distretto Rurale e Biologico della Val di Cecina while walking through vineyards, olive groves, farmsteads, and small producers.

Ideal if you are looking for something easy-going, perhaps at sunset, to then relax with a tasty countryside aperitivo.

Dog Trekking

Memorable hikes in total safety for you and your dog

Having a certified nature guide and canine educator by your side means experiencing adventures in total safety: for you, for the dog, and for the group.

And we know that when we are all relaxed, we have more fun and create unforgettable moments.

Why it matters

  • Canine walks are not just “outings with dogs”: they are activities designed for their physical, emotional, and relational fulfillment.
  • Every dog is observed and guided correctly, avoiding stress and pressure.
  • The guide knows the territory well and the external conditions: suitable times, temperatures, wildlife, and trail status.
  • Groups are small by choice, to guarantee the highest level of attention and a connessione più profonda between you and your four-legged friend, without giving up the pleasure of socializing.

At the source of Wellspring Trails

Wellspring Trails was born from a radical life change. Maria Gianfilippi, a structural engineer from Verona, rediscovered the joy of the relationship with dogs and walking in nature thanks to her Golden Retriever, Maebh, whom she affectionately calls “my queen and alter ego.”

With her, she began training in a Civil Protection group for search and rescue of missing persons; she then underwent training to become a certified canine educator specialized in behavior; and together with Maebh, she walked a stretch of the Via Francigena solo: an important experience that brought her back “to the source of the path,” to a more essential way of living the present moment and dedicating herself to the world of dogs.

That journey became an invitation to change course. After a holiday in Val di Cecina, Maria fell in love with the territory and decided to move to Canneto, later obtaining her Nature Guide license. And she brought her own story and experience with her to Tuscany.

Today, she accompanies small groups through Val di Cecina and Costa degli Etruschi, showing hidden scenic spots and sharing what she has learned about the journey, about being in the here and now, and about the relationship with animals.

“Dogs teach you to stay in the present moment,” Maria tells us. And from the way her eyes shine when she says it, you can tell how much she truly believes it.

If you want to slow down and experience Tuscany in total harmony with nature, Wellspring Trails accompanies you to the wellspring of wellbeing: one step at a time.

Where do the excursions take place?
Activities mainly take place in Val di Cecina, discovering the natural beauty and landscapes around Volterra and its charming neighboring villages, such as Canneto, Monteverdi Marittimo, Riparbella, Montescudaio, Castellina Marittima, Castelnuovo and Montecatini in Val di Cecina, Casale Marittimo, and Bibbona with its famous Grotte Gialle.

However, excursions are also planned in Val di Cornia and Costa degli Etruschi, including Bolgheri, Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, San Vincenzo, and as far as Populonia and the beautiful beaches of Baratti and Cala Violina.

Upon request, excursions or trekking can also be organized towards Val d’Elsa, San Gimignano, and Monteriggioni. Tuscany is a jewel to be discovered at a slow pace.
All year round. Spring for the blooms, Autumn for the ideal climate and foliage colors, Winter for the muffled atmospheres and clear skies, and Summer at sunset or nighttime to admire the fireflies.
Based on the season, temperatures, and daylight hours, without ever overlooking the safety of the participants and the condition of the trails.
Costs are not fixed and vary based on the type of excursion and group size. For example, a standard full-day excursion is approximately €20 per person, and less for morning or afternoon experiences.

An educational experience with your dog can cost around €25, while “simpler” canine walks can range between €10 and €15.

Fees for food and wine tastings are separate and not included in the excursion cost. To see updated prices or request a tailor-made offer, the best thing to do is consult the Wellspring Trails website or contact Maria directly.
Of course, with tailor-made paths and educational activities designed for them: they can learn to recognize plants, discover forest and countryside trades, or spot the tracks of wild animals.
Specific gear is essential!

  • For people: shoes with good grip are essential, preferably high-ankle ones for more demanding trails. Long pants are always recommended, even in summer, to protect against insects and brambles. It is also fundamental to bring water and small snacks.
  •
  • For dogs: we recommend an H-harness and a sufficiently long leash to ensure comfort and safety. It is also important to bring water for your dog and something to snack on during breaks, such as a natural chew, while staying at a proper distance from other teams.
Yes, all sizes are welcome, with special attention to the needs of large dogs, who build up heat easily and have more stress on their joints.
Yes, the activities are open to anyone who wishes to enjoy a rewarding and rejuvenating experience.
It depends on the specific proposal, but generally, these are small groups, ensuring greater safety and attention to everyone’s expectations.
Yes, but always under the supervision of the canine instructor to ensure a peaceful experience. A maximum of 2-3 dogs are allowed for “mixed” nature excursions and a maximum of 8-10 dogs for personalized canine experiences (those involving play and scent activities).
Zero risk does not exist, but the guide carefully evaluates the weather, any hunting seasons, trail status, and any other dangers or special situations, planning an experience that guarantees satisfaction and safety for all participants.
The guide is a certified Nature Guide (GAE) authorized according to the Tourism Code of the Tuscany Region, practicing the profession under L.4/2013. She is a certified canine educator according to the UNI 11790:2020 standard, an expert in behavior, specialized in Nosework and person tracking (both professional and recreational), and comes with a solid background in classical, artistic, and engineering studies.

With Wellspring Trails, you will find expertise on the trails, interesting and fun stories about the places, empathy, smiles, and attention to the well-being of both the group and your dog.
Yes. Specifically, she collaborates with selected tourist facilities and local businesses for food and wine proposals, such as aperitivi and tastings during minitours or excursions in the Macchia di Decimo.

Wellspring Trails has the official patronage of the Distretto Rurale e Biologico della Val di Cecina, an organization dedicated to enhancing the local rural and natural heritage. She actively promotes the Val di Cecina Republic brand, a cultural project the guide has embraced due to her unconditional love for the territory.

With a long history of volunteering in non-profit organizations, Maria is also one of the founding members and handles communication for the social promotion association Terre di Walfredo. She is in contact with the municipal administration of Monteverdi Marittimo to promote local trail networks, including the area of the Abbazia di San Pietro in Palazzuolo.
